HOCKEY JUBILEE

Enthusiastic Festivities PRESENT PLAYERS WIN Players who had worn the Hutt Hockey Club’s jersey during the past 25 years, or in the two previous years, when the club was the Petone Hockey Club, met at the jubilee celebrations on Saturday. Among those present was one of the foundation members of 1909, Mr. N. Judd and Mr. W. A. Smith, 1911, who had come from Taihape. Festivities began with a procession from the Lower Hutt Post Office to the Nai Nai ground where the club’s annual gala day matches were played between old time and present day senior A and senior B players.

In the A grade match, for the Stoupe Cup, held by the old timers for the last three years, the present players were the victors by 5 goals to 1. At half-time the score was 2 to 1 in favour of the present day team. The second game, played by the senior B men, resulted in a win for the present day men, too, by 4 goals to 1. Present day had led 2-0 at half time. The jubilee dinner followed in the Central Hotel, Petone, and was attended by 75 past and present players. Mr. E. S. Innes, club president, presided, and reviewed the history of the club, recalling that it had been formed by the Rev. T. A. Williams as the Petone Hockey Club in 1909, ibut the name had been changed to Hutt Valley Hockey Club two years afterward. -In 1926 it had won the senior A championship, an achievement, that had been duo chiefly to the training of Mr. Robert Lee. Since 1920 a very high standard had been set by the club, and it had produced a number of famous players, including R. Lusty, who had captained New Zealand team in Australia, E. McLeod, who had captained the team in New Zealand in all the matches against, the Indians, and C. Smallwood. The toast list comprised “The Old Timers” proposed by Messrs. K. Falconer and S. Gilder, and responded to by Messrs. C. Harvey and H. Marsh; “The Ladies,” proposed by Mr. J. Clout ; “St. John Ambulance, Umpires, Kindred Sports, Other Clubs, and the Wellington Hockey Association,” proposed by Mr. H. J. Bishop, and responded to by Messrs. Ross, Martin, Wright, Burt, McDougall and Camp. Mr. F. Stoupe presented the Stoupe Cup to the captain of the present-day team, K. F. Falconer. The festivities terminated with a dance at Miss Eva Draper’s studio at Lower Hutt, which was filled. Mr. S. Diamond wag M.C., and Arnold’s Orchestra supplied the music. The committee was Messrs. N.
