Doherty’s Rink Retains Badges
THE FERNS CHANGE „ HANDS
There was another full attendance at the indoor bowling green in the Wellington Winter Show building on Saturday afternoon.
One of the contests of the week is always for the mid-week ferns. There were two games for these baubles during last week. Ross, Handsoil, Munro and Duncan (s.) wrested the ferns from Wrigley, Ridley. McWhannell and Wellings (s.), the respective scores being 24-20. The new holders were promptly challenged by a Petone Central rink comprised of Elvine, Caley, Pawson and Eebley (s.), who went down 26-18.
The game for the badges played on Saturday afternoon saw the Doherty rink still in possession. The game was a keen one. Only on two heads were two points scored ; on the rest all singles. The scores were :—Holders, Cook, Morpeth, Bell, Doherty (s.), 15; challengers, Brice, Mason, J. Hale, M. Hale (s.j, 11. Friendly rink games resulted as follow : McCune beat Taylor, 26-23 ; Estall beat Burns, 17-14; Lewis beat Rickets, 21-19; Mailman beat Burbidge, 18-13; Watts beat Lawrie, 26-12; Donald beat Ross, 18-14; Johnston beat Wilson. 2118. New Zealanders’ Tournament. The fifth round of the New Zealanders’ Association tournament at the indoor bowling green was, with the exception of two games, completed last week. Following are the results :— Section A.—Gray 23, Fletcher 21; Edwards 16, Ryan 13; Wilson 26, Jones 20. Section B. —Bedell 19, Keech 15; Osborne 28, Smith 19; Warwick 20, Urwin 19: Woodley 20, Paton 19. Section C. —O’Neil 21, Naylor 19; Glen 25, McKay 17; Brackenridge 30, Johns 16; Nicholls 20. Bland 11. Section D.—Sheary 23, Parry 18; Duncan 23, Estall .12. Further rounds will be played this evening and on Wednesday evening.
King’s Birthday Tourney.
Nine rinks will be engaged in the King’s Birthday tournament to be played to-morrow, commencing at 9 a.in. There will be five games of 10 heads, with a time limit of an hour and a quarter for each game; only one dead head per rink will be allowed in each game. If there is more than one dead head by a rink, then a point will be registereel against that rink. The object of this rule, of course, is to get through the games on time.
