NAPIER PARK

Steeplechase Won By Strom e SPRINT TO PASSION FLOWER Dominion Special Service. Napier, June 20. The Napier Park Racing Club opened its winter meeting fairly successfully today; The weather was fine and sunny, but the course was heavy after an exceptional downpour earlier in the week. The £4773/10/- put through the totglisator watt an Increase of £BBB on the. turnover of the first day last year. The racing wn« keen and produced s-ome good finishes. ~ a Surprising Dividend.

John Charles ecored convincingly in the Moteo Hack Hurdles and hie supporters drew a surprisingly good dividend. Souchong made the running for a mile, with John Charles running nicely in behind. In the next bunch were Manifesto and Lord Hereford, with Cutie moderately placed. John Charles had charge before entering the straight, and he ran on to a length victory over Lord Hereford, who was a couple of lengths in front of Manifesto. Curie was running on in fourth place and Souchong was fifth. John Charlee handled the going well and should have a profitable winter. Curie ran pleasingly. / The Maidens. Luculliw Lad, strongly favoured in the big field of maidens, failed badly. Le Touquet soon got to the front and in the straight drew out to win by two lengths from Master Hector, who had a great battle witli Black Magic for second. Golden Ilidge was a fair fourth and Inheritance was fifth. Close Finish. There was a close finish in the Meeanee Hack Handicap, Hunter’s Morn hanging on just long enough to beat Royal Feast, who has been placed in his last three starts. Hunting Star got away badly, and Hunter’s Morn pulled to the front to lead into the straight from Mata Hari. Hunting Star, Royal Feast and De Friend. Royal Feast finished particularly well and crossed the line almost on terms with Hunter’s Morn, who won by a head. Huntihg Star, who was third, was two lengths away, half a head in front of Mata Hari. Evidently last week's racing improved Royal Feast, who finished in sterling style. Hunting Star will improve. Sfrome’s Success. Although only four contested the Napier Steeplechase, a good race and an exciting finish resulted. Battleground dislodged his rider at the first fence, a brush. Tie was remounted, but refused at the stand double. Except that Kaokaoroa lost ground occasionally, the remaining three ran together most of the way. Nearing the straight Strome and Dozie went away from Kaokaoroa. Stiwme had a small advantage all through the last couple of furlongs and won by a short neck after a battling duel. Kaokaoroa was about ten lengths away. Strome promises to do well as a steeplechaser. Dozie conceded her victor 111 b. and ran a good race.' Gentlemen Riders. Sunny Sky was sent out favourite for the Ladies’ Handicap, but failed to pay

a dividend. Tahoma trailed Wahine Nui to the straight, and in the closest finish of the day won by a nose from The Grasper, who finished solidly. Wahiue Nui was a poor third, and Sunny Sky was fourth. Very Easy Win. The easiest win of the day was that of Passion Flower in the Flying Handicap, for which Bodyline and Quake were tho favourites. It was not long before Bodyline was bowling along in front, and he turned for home slightly ahead of Quake, with Passion Flower lying next and coming through on the rails. Quake soon had Bodyline’s measure, but Passion Flower easily deposed Quake and won going away by four lengths. Slippery was third, half a length behind Quake and just in front of Bodyline. Passion Flower revelled ill the soft going and was much too good. Slippery was going well at the finish. Hunting Jay was badly left. Another Victory. Master Cyklon, who won at. Hastings last week, scored in the Settlers’ Hack Handicap, for which he was only fourth favourite in a good betting race. Master Cyklon was prominent all' the way, but Trailer was first to turn for home. At the distance Master Cyklon, Trailer, Granvale, Blue Garter and Blygain looked like staging a great finish, but Master Cyklon was superior in the final run and won by a length and a half over Blue Garter, who shot up in the last stride to take second place from Trailer. Blygain was a fair fourth. Master Cyklon thoroughly deserved his victory, and. as indicated previously, is useful. Granvale gave way in the last half-furlong and finished weakly.
