Has Labour Failed?
Sir, —Your correspondent “Disgusted," in making excuses for having rendered assistance to the Labour Party at the last election, now assumes a very pessimistic attitude toward the efforts that are being made to restore prosperity in our Dominion. He admits that the Government cannot improve things for everyone at once, and then goes on to refer to the legislation which has been passed—for the sole purpose of increasing the incomes of the people—endeavouring to establish that such legislation will have the effect of making the conditions worse than they were before. There are doubtless many thousands of electors who, like myself, voted Lab-' our at the last elections for the first time, who are quite prepared to give the Government every chance and encouragement during its term of office to place the Dominion on a higher plane than it has attained during the past decade. No one outside a mental hospital could reasonably expect the desired results within a period of seven, or even 12 months, following an election, but I consider there is undoubted evidence of a steady improvement in conditions already; for this the poor and unemployed people are grateful to the Prime Minister and his Cabinet, notwithstanding the pessimism of “Disgusted” and other disgruntled supporters of the Opposition. It may be interesting to your correspondent to know that in all parts of the civilised world “eyes are on New Zealand.” the earnest desire being that the policy to be put into operation by our Government will prove most successful; if so, a lead will be given to the world in general, which may mean the salvation of civilisation. Is the objective worth while? That is the question.—-I am, etc., WELL-WISHER. New Plymouth, June 19.
