Civil Servants’ “Cuts”

Sir, —I am’ quite in accordance with "E. 8. that the “cuts" should at least be made retrospective as from the beginning of the financial year, as quite a number of the outside firms have restored their employees’ “cuts” from that date. I would not go so far as to put the Government in the same category as the Forbes-Coates' regime, Although I am ■ disappointed that the Government cannot seg its way clear to make the restorptior. of the “cuts" retrospective, I would remind “E. 8. of the Opposition’s cry: . “Where is the money coming from?” Perhaps that has some bearing on the present position.—l am, ete., OLD CIVIL SERVANT. Petone, June 18.

Sir, —“Student’s” letter iu your issue of June 15 amazes me. To criticise our Prime Minister for what he said about restoring salary “cuts’’ is to my mind nothing short of impertinence. Everybody knows that Government servants were on the box seat during the slump. Certainly they; had “cuts” the same as everybody else, but nevertheless they were left with a good steady salary (wet weather or fine) to carry on with. Does “Student”; ever think of those Government servants who received 100 per cent, “cuts,” yes, no pensions, or anything? With records of excellent service to the State—2s years and upwardsome of them were discharged. Does he think his class should come before them? These 100 per cent, “cut” servants do not rush into print to ridicule the best Prime Minister for the worker New Zealand has ever had. No, they leave it to him, knowing quite well that their cases will receive his earnest consideration.

Government servants, to my mind, are being treated admirably by the present Government. Letters such ‘as “Student’s” show, nothing but greed.—l am, etc., CONTENTED. Wellington, June 19.
