KHANDALLAH AFFAIRS

Improvements in Postal

Facilities

The monthly meeting of the Khandallah Progressive Association was held at the Parish Hall recently,. Mr. M. S. Galloway presiding. Advice was received from Mr. L. G. Lowry, M.P., that the post office would be open in separate premises under a postmistress and with a telegraph messenger in attendance be fore the end of the present month. Mr. Galloway expressed the executive’s satisfaction with the stage which had been reached in these negotiations. Under present arrangement the revenue from postal services was in the vicinity of £9O a year, he said, whereas Seatoun with its more adequate facilities was bringing a revenue of approximately £2OO. On behalf of the association, he appealed to all residents to make full use of the improved postal facilities when provided, thereby demonstrating the need which existed for them. Another improvement in the postal matters which had been considered was the clearance box at Te Kainga. It was ’understood that when the new arrangement came into force clearance from boxes in the district to connect with the south boat and main trunk would be much later in the afternoon than was the case at present. The secretary was instructed to write to Messrs. R. A. Wright and Lowry and the chief postmaster, acknowledging the co-operation which had been shown in securing improved services. Miss L. Williams wrote thanking the association for its endeavours in connection with improved access from Te Kainga to the Hutt Road. The question of improved library facilities was again discussed, and it was resolved that the chairman in conjpany with Messrs. Orr, and Barrington interview the chief librarian. Regarding school facilities for people on the eastern side of the district, the executive had inspected the sites, and later a small deputation had met the members of the city ward of the Education Board, a site being determined, which the latter would recommend to the board as being suitable for acquirement at an early date. It was agreed that authority be given to purchase six dozen vases up to the value of £3/3/- as a donation to the Onslow Horticultural Society. The chairman reported that he bad discussed the matter of the improvement of Cashmere Park with the director of parks and reserves, and from that <onversation hoped that at an early date the necessary excavation and laying out of the area would be taken in hand and completed. A letter was received from the secretary of the Khandallah School Committee in reference to the erection of an overhead bridge over the railway line for children journeying from the eastern side of the district to the school. While appreciating the importance of the matter, it was decided that owing to. the proposed changes in the railway service and track the time was inopportune to bring the matter before the authorities.

The question of amending the consti tution of the issociation to . provide for the reduction in membership fee was discussed, and a resolution to this effect will be submitted to the annual meeting. The secretary reported that since the last meeting there had been an increase of six in the membership. It was decided again to draw the attention of the ctiy council to the lowering of the Jubilee Road, thereby providing better access from Te Kainga to the business area of Khandallah Representations arc also to be made to the city engineer’s department for improvement of the surfacing of Simla Crescent and Simla Avenue.
