FACTS ABOUT FRUIT

Fruit is a valuable item in the diet, but it should be taken wisely and not just at any time that there is a temporary feeling of hunger. Fruits taken alone are the most easily digestible and wholesome of all foods, but when taken with meat, milk, fat or sugar, they often cause discomfort, the blame for which is laid on the fruit instead of the unwise mixture. We hear of “fruit cures” resulting in remarkable benefit in certain diseases. Patients live for a prescribed time on ripe orange juice, the system being relieved entirely of the work of digesting starch. The fruit juices are curative and cleaning. They have a good effect on the liver, and this explains the “cure.” Grains and fruit go well together, and nuts, either ground or well masticated, form a perfect meal with fruit. Apples, oranges, grapefruit, and tomatoes are a valuable source of vitamin C. The banana is deficient in vitamins. but is an energy producer when sun ripened. Dates contain natural sugars, iron, calcium, and other salts, and are a meal in themselves. Figs are a valuable brain food. Lemon juice makes a good all-round drink, while raisins, soaked overnight in water, are excellent for those suffering from anaemia.
