AUCKLAND TROTS

Good Fields Engaged

PROSPECTS REVIEWED

(By

Overcheck.)

Excellent acceptances have been received by the Auckland Trotting Club for the first day of its winter meeting, which opens to-day. With the exception of De

Soto, the whole of the contestants are North Island horses, mostly drawn from the Auckland province, so that local form should work out reasonably well. To-day’s programme is as follows: —

11.‘35-— , . WINTER HANDICAP, of £130; unhoppled trotters; 3.49 class. One mile and a

The field engaged in the Winter Handicap, though substantial iu numbers,, is not very strong from the point of view of quality. Of the scratch division Sophy Bingen, Nelson’s Glory and Colleen Murphy should give a good account of themselves. If Native Leaf could be relied upon to race up to Wairarapa form, she would be hard to beat, but her more recent form has been disappointing. On this account Franz Derby may be in greater demand, and may follow Sophy Bingen and Nelson’s Glory in order of favouritism. 12.10—

Another large field is engaged in the Mongers Handicap, and many of the runners are likely to have their chances prejudiced. Back-markers will find it difficult to secure an uninterrupted passage, and so preference may be shown for Aerial Bell, Stargum and Sir Frank, who will be bracketed with Hori Bingen. 12.45— HOBSON HANDICAP, of £150; 3.36 class.

If she goes to the post Electric Bell will no doubt be the popular selection lor the Hobson Handicap, but the race is no certainty for her as the field is quite a good one. Lucky Love. Red Frontier, Proletarian and Star Pronto are sure to have plenty of friends, particularly the two last-named. Proletarian, however, usually does best on top of the ground. In a good betting race the best supported may be Electric Bell, Star. Pronto and Lucky Love.

The ruling favourites for the Adams Memorial Handicap are De Soto and the Bonny Azure-King’s Warrior bracket, and the race certainly looks likely to be a contest between these three horses. Of the others, Kewpie’s Triumph may find most support.

2 o—— STEWARDS’ HANDICAP TROT, of £175; unhoppled trotters; 4.54 class. Two miles. Meadow King scr Arapal ....... 36 Dllfashlon .. 12 Golden Eagle . 36 Captain Bolt .. 12 Ando Patch ... 3t> Young Rodney 24 Gala Day .... 48 Polly Pan ... 24 Waikato Prince <2 Manna’s Son . 36

’ The field for the Stewards’ Handicap is a very useful one. Polly Pan, Arapai, Golden Eagle, and Waikato Prince are all useful, and these four-alone would provide an interesting contest. Polly Pan and IVaikatb Prince will be bracketed, and

will no doubt carry the bulk- of the investments. 2.35 1 - MARCONI HANDICAP, of £165; 3.31 class. One mile and a half.

In the Marconi Handicap Silk Cord and Star Pronto read nicely on scratch. Although he has failed over two miles, Nervie’s Last must be respected from 12 yards over this distance, and so also must the consistent Kewpie’s Bond on 24 yards. Belinda King raced in improved form on the "West Coast circuit a short time ago, and would hardly have made the journey if his trainer did not hope to win some of the stake money. Winaway may do best of those further back, but the public may show a preference for Star Pronto, Silk Cord and Nervie’s Last. 3.10 — CORNWALL HANDICAP, ot £2OO ; 2.47 class. One mile and a quarter.

The day’s programme will conclude with the Cornwall Handicap, in which there will be two brackets, viz., Bonny AzureKing’s Warrior, and Wee MachineTravis. The public ■will probably not look further for the winner.
