OBITUARY
Mr. Henry Walthall
Hollywood, June 17.
The death occurred to-day in a sanatorium of Henry Walthall, a star of the silent cinema.
Henry B. Walthall was one of the best known of the old actors of the screen, appearing in many films in the silent days. He was born in Shelby City, Alabama, and reached success on the stage before turning to the films. He appeared in the famous production “The Birth of a Nation” in 1910, and since then had played in hundreds of pictures, notably “Abraham Lincoln,” “The Bridge of San Luis Rey,” and “Viva Villa I” in which he had the role of Madero. A recent appearance was in the part of Dr. Manette in “A Tale of Two Cities.”
Senator Fletcher Washington, June 17.
The death has occurred of Senator Fletcher (Democrat), of Florida, one of President Roosevelt’s staunchest supporters.
Born in Georgia in 1850, Senator Duncan Upshaw Fletcher completed his education at the University of Tennessee, where he took his degree in science, and at Vanderbilt University, where lie read law. He was .admitted to tile American Bar in 1881, and practised at Jacksonville, Florida. He entered the Florida House of Representatives in 1593, became Mayor of Jacksonville in tiie same year, and chairman of the Democrat State Conference in 1905, He was appointed by tiie Government to the Senate in 1908 and was successively re-elected thereafter. He became a member of the Senate Committees on Commerce, on Printing (of which he was once chairman), Military Affairs, Banking and Currency,_and of the sub-committee on appropriations.
