FORECAST FOR TO-DAY’S WEATHER.
Changeable and squally, showers in most districts. Following is the weather report and forecast issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, for the 24 hours ending 3 p.m. to-day:— A rather vigorous depression of the westerly type crossed the Dominion yesteiday, while an anti-cyclone extends from Australia over the north Tasman Sea on to the northern districts. Westerly winds at first north of Farewell Spit and Kaikoura; south-westerlies thence southward and extending shortly over most ol the Dominion; moderate to strong generally and of gale force at places. Seas rough in New Zealand waters on the west coast and offshore south of Castlepoint; moderate north of Castlepoint, but rising offshore. Moderate to strong south-west winds, with rather rough to rough seas, in the eastern Tasman Sea. Weather changeable and squally, with showers in most districts; hail probable on parts of the coastal areas of the South Island, and snow on the ranges. Temperatures cold. YESTERDAY’S WEATHER. Wellington.—Briliiantlv fine, with a moderate to strong north-westerly wind. Minimum temperature on Wednesday night, 42<leg.; maximum yesterday, 57(1eg.; at 3 p.m., 54deg. ~ . , Rainfall at “The Dominion’’ building for 24 hours ended midnight, .2nn. Total for month, 1.78 in.; total for year, 24.68iu. Palmerston North.— Passing clouds and frequent light rain showers with a cold westerly to southerly wind. Masterton. — Bright sunshine; cloudless sky ; westerly wind. Wanganui.— Passing clouds, intermittent showers, light westerly breeze. Waipnkiirau.—A sunny morning with a gusty wind. Cloud in the afternoon, with occasional showers. The barometer was steady. Auckland.—Squally weather with a fresh westerly wind and several light showers; the conditions were mild. The barometer remained steady at about 29.90 m. Christchurch. —Sunny in the morning after five degrees of frost, and overcast in the afternoon, with rain. A light south-west breeze blew in the morning and a moderate south-west in the afternoon. The maximum temperature was 57 3dcg. The barometer was rising steadily' and last evening registered 29.90 in. Dunedin.—Dull and threatening, with cold temperatures. There was a fresh breeze from the south-west. The barometer rose throughout the day.
