NATIONAL JERSEY SHOW AND SALE

Awards arid Prices AUCTION AT PALMERSTON Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, June 18. There was a total entry of 54 stud animals, both males and females, for the seventh winter national Jersey show and sale held at the Manawatu Agricultural and Pastobal Association’s grounds at Palmerston North to-day. The .entry comprised 12 cows, 18 in-ealf heifers, 8 yearling heifers, and 16 bulls. The event was conducted by IVright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., and Abraham and Williams Ltd. The standard throughout was reasonably fair, but better stock has been seen in other years. The judge at the sale was Mr. D. O’Sullivan, Inglewood. The grand championship winner was a five-year-old bull, Jersey Glen Spright, belonging to Mr. J. N. Mackintosh, Wanganui. With a list of 10 championships and reserve championships at previous shows behind it, the bull is one of proven quality. A fine looking beast, it has a strong head, good lines and a good body. It was subsequently passed at auction at 55gns. T Three sound animals shown by Mr. J. N. Mackintosh, Wanganui, carried off the three prizes lin the cow class. The champion and the other two were quife nice both for quality and breed character, though they lacked a little in size. The winner possessed a better developed udder than other cows in the class. The class for heifers in-calf was quite a strong one. Mr. . It. L. Horn', Ohau, brought forward the two winning animals in this division, both of which appealed as being promising heifers. The third placed animal was one shown by Mr. P. A. Anderson, Levin. In the yearling heifer class Mr. P. A. Anderson annexed all three awards, with three good females. The first two were particularly- promising animals which are likely to be good when mature. They were nicely brought out. Some really good bulls were entered in their classes: In the division for two-year-olds and over, the first prize animal was that of Mr. J. N. Mackintosh, which was also awarded the grand championship. The competition in this class was not particularly strong because of the fact that quite a number of the entries were young bulls, which gave the few aged animals a definite winning advantage. A two-year-old male, shown by Mr. R. L. Horn, Ohau, filled second place ami an exhibit of Mr. F. V. Bryant, Mangatainoka, was third. Promising youngsters., secured the prizes in the yearling bull class, the first prize going to Mr. J. O’Donnell, Bunnythorpe, and the second and third to Mr. F. V. Bryant. The winner was exceptionally promising, and the next two placed Were quite good animals. Awards in the Jersey club groups were as follow: Wanganui. 1; Horowhenua, 2; Manawatu, 3; Woodville, 4. Passings Numerous. When the stock was later put up for auction there was a good attendance of buyers present, mainly from various parts of the Manawatu, although a few districts further afield were also represented. Because of the unwillingness of the vendors of reserved lots to meet the market only about half of the catalogue was disposed of at auction. There was very little demand for bulls, a fact which can be largely accounted for by the fact that it is a little early in the season. Competition was quite spirited for unreserved lots, which realised market values. A number of the reserved lots were bidded up to a good price, but the owners were reluctant to meet the market. Realisations were as follow:— A/c. T. Ranford, Whakorangu, two-year-old bull, to E. J. Jensen, Otaki, 7gps. A/c. J. N.
