MANGATERA BIRTHDAY

The Maugatera Women’s Institute held its second birthday recently in the hall, which looked very gay, decorated in the institute colours, brown and gold. _ The president. Mrs. Copp, welcomed visitors and members Mrs. Reynolds presented Mrs. Copp with a bouquet in the institute colours, with best wishes for a successful year. Items were given by Miss J. Thompson, Mi’s. M. Graham, Mcsdames Ewart, Anderson ajid Reynolds, Misses B. Thompson, J. Williams, June Orange and by Mcsdames W. Thompson, E. Williams and C. Lash. The roll-call was taken, the various institutes responding with greetings. A cake made by Airs. Lash and iced by Mrs. Hutchinson was appreciated. The president lit the two candles, Miss Joy Williams, youngest member, blowing them out. Mrs. Ewart Anderson, the oldest member, cut the cake. After tea community singing was enjoyed, led by Miss J. Thompson. A display of members work was admired by the visitors.

Mrs. Doshier presided over a very large attendance of members and visitors at the monthly meeting of the Rangiwahia Women’s Institute. Mrs. Bolshier was elected delegate to the Dominion conference at Dunqdin. An enjoyable social afternoon followed, to bid farewell to two of the members, Mrs. Haythorne and Miss G. Morgan. The president made reference to the loss the institute would sustain in Mrs. Haythorne’s departure. Mrs. Haythorne had been one of the initial members, and her services had been invaluable in making bouquets or wreaths, and in demonstrating various ways of icing cakes. Tributes to Mrs. Haythorne were also paid by Mrs. Guthrie and Mrs. Guinane, Mangawekin Mrs. Boshier presented her with a silver jam spoon, with the Women's Institute badge engraved on it, and a box of flowers. A bouquet was presented to her from the drama circle. Mrs. Haythorne feelingly responded. Miss .Morgan, who is soon to be married, was calleci upon to accept a serviette ring and a box of flowers. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Jenkins, Kre’igher, Martin, Misses A. McKenzie and Jenkins. Paekakariki. Although there was not a full attendance of members at the Paekakariki AVomen’s Institute June meeting, an enjoyable afternoon was spent. Mrs. Gibson Young’s talk on drama and the work of the institute was. enjoyed. There were several competitions: the best matinee coat made from two skeins of wool, a buttonhole made with a single thread, a plate of plain scones, and the best floral buttonhole. Items were given by the singing circle, and the serving of afternoon tea brought the meeting to a close. Kaliutara. A meeting was held in the Kahutara hall recently for the purpose of forming a women’s institute. When the aims and objects of the women’s institute were explained by Mrs. Jolly, Martinborough, voluntary organiser, all those present enthusiastically agreed to form an institute. The following officers were elected: — President, Mrs. L. McKenna; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames Bargh and Corlet; sec-retary-treasurer, Mrs. C. G. Playle; committee, Mesdames Hood. G. Cole, Harvey, Russell, Lepper, Harland, Rogers. and McGarvie. All were interested iu a demonstration given by Mrs. McKenna on papier-mache. Mrs. Playle won the musical parcel game, the prize being donated by Mrs. Jolly. Hostesses for the afternoon tea were Mesdames Corlet, G. Cole, and E. Hodder. Pioneer Club. At the recent monthly meeting of the Pioneer Club W.I. centre, the programme opened with an interesting address by Mr. Lundius, assisted by Mrs. Lundins, on their experiences iu the Tarawera eruption of 1886. Among a large number of visitors were Mrs. D. Baius, of Fairlie W.1., and Mrs. Deans, Darfield W.1., who spoke briefly on institute matters. Miss Russell Ferguson brought a greeting from her institute at Oban, and gave a graphic description of the early days of institutes in the Hebrediau Islands. Mrs. Henderson and Mrs. McGuone organised a bridge party, the proceeds to aid federation funds. The prizes were won b.v Mrs. Wilkins and Mrs. Henderson. Mrs. K. N. Heighway was elected the delegate to attend the annual general meeting iu Dunedin. Afternoon tea was served, and members enjoyed a social half-hour. Silverstreain. “Thrift is the hive of industry,” was the motto chosen for this month by the Silverstreain Women’s Institute. Mrs. Spackman conducted the meeting. A cheery fire in the side hall welcomed membens, who, in the unavoidable absence of a demonstrator, held a social afternoon. Later games and dancing were enjoyed in the main hall. The cookery competition for the best plate of pikelets was won by Mrs. Cleaver. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Balfour, T. Bucknell, Castle, Kurth and Linford. Koikorangi-Waikanae. The June meeting of the ReikorangiAVaikanae Women’s Institute was held in the School Hall, Rcikorangi, recently. Mrs. Monk presided. During the afternoon Mrs. S. Wilson interested all with a demonstration on re-covering an eiderdown quilt. The competitions for the day resulted as follow:—Eggless cake: Miss N. Wilson, 1; Mrs. Heffer, 2; Miss M. Stubbinge, 3. Bed socks: Mrs. Wilson, 1. The hostesses, Mesdames Clifton and Carter, served afternoon tea. Pongaroa. A. large attendance of visitors and members was recorded nt the Pongaroa Women's Institute meeting, Mrs. Mayman presiding. It was decided to purchase 5/- worth of Anzac stamps, and also material for trayclotbs for the Pongaroa Hospital. The two competitions resulted as follow:—Puff pastry, Mrs. Kent, 1; Mesdames Jensen and E. Kent, 2. Boys’ trousers: Mrs. Mayman, 1 and 3; Mrs. Scott, 2. The social half-hour included a talk <>n first aid by Dr. Fougrie, and a pianoforte duet by Miswes D. and E. Kent. A suggestion book for demonstrations and competitions has been begun and it is hoped that members will take advantage of it. At next month’s meeting Rakaunui will amalgamate with Pongaroa and there will be a demonstration on “papier rnacbe.” ElsthonH'. The main item at the June meeting of the Elsthorpc Women’s Institute was a talk on the early days of New Zealand Government. A 6d. recipe and sample sale was held in aid of the H.B. Children’s Home. There was a generous response to the request that members knit suitable garments from old wool to be sent for distribution to the Plnuket society. The social hour was taken up with folk dancing and community singing and the usual competitions were held. Marlinborotigh. Fifty-four members attended the monthly meeting of the Martinborough Women’s Institute held recently. Mrs. Tyler presided, and four new members were elected. In the competition for the best plate of scones, Mrs. Tyler was awarded first place, Mrs. Herrick second and Mrs. Davidson third. Mrs. P. Welch was the demonstrator, hex subject being respriuginc and recovering upholstered furniture.
