SPEED ON THE ROADS
Unusual Plea Advanced By Doctor MOTOR-CYCLISTS FINED “I had a lady in my car who was in a state of nervous excitability, and threatening suicide, and I had to hurry to bring her into town, was the unusual plea lint forward by Dr. Albert Sternberg, of T.'pper Hutt, when charged before Mr. E. D. Mosley. S.M., in the Wellington Magistrates Court yesterday with exceeding 20 miles an hour, when driving along'the Hutt Road past Kaiwarra. . Mr. A. R. Cooper, city solicitor, who prosecuted, said that a traffic inspector had followed the doctor and stopperl linn. "The inspector reported that the doctor should pay more attention to the road." he said. . . "I was in a very peculiar position, because the lady was by my side, and so I could not say anything about her or explain to the inspector,” said Dr. Sternberg. "That sounds reasonable, said the magistrate. The doctor was convicted and ordered to pay costs. Speedy Motor-cycling. Stated to have ridden a motor-cycle at excessive speed along Jervois Quay, Denis Richard Dark was lined 20/- and costs. Mr. Cooper said that defendant had been paced by a traffic inspector. He had been going at 45 miles an hour. "It is fortunate for you you're charged under the by-laws, not the motoring regulations, otherwise I should have had to suspend your licence,” said the magistrate. Another motor-cyclist, William Bowe, was charged with riding at excessive speed down Tory Street toward Wakefield Street. He was stated to have been travelling at 35 miles an hour, lhe tine imposed was 20/- and costs. Cecil Wilfred Norris was stated to have been seen by a traffic inspector riding at 40 miles an hour along Thorndon Quay at a time when traffic was very heavy and visibility bad. He had passed all the other traffic, and when questioned had said that the other traffic was moving too slowly. He was fined £2 and costs, and ordered to have his licence endorsed. For driving a car at 40 miles an hour along Queen’s Drive toward the Tavistock Road intersection, Albert Martindale was fined 20/- and costs. "That speed is dangerous, absolutely dangerous,” said the magistrate.
