STRANGLED IN CELL

Police Discovery at Timaru By Telegraph—Press Association. Timaru, June IS. Shortly before 7.30 this morning, a man held on a charge of theft strangled himself in a cell at the Timaru police station with the aid of a towel and the bedclothes. Prisoner was Joseph Owen Green, 26 years of age, an unemployed man, who yesterday before the court was charged with stealing £2. Bail was allowed, but accused was unable to find the surety of £5O and remained in custody. A constable looked in the cell early this morning and saw Green apparently asleep. He went back later to clean up, and on going to rouse Green found him with the blankets over his head and his face buried in the pillow. A towel was found tied round his neck and drawn tight at the back. Deceased is believed to be a native of Gore.
