DRY SPELL BROKEN
Bay of Plenty Floods
Dominion Special Service. , AuckLTiul, June 10.
The long dry spell experienced recently in the Bay of Plenty district was broken early this morning by a heavy downpour, which caused floods and wash-outs in some parts. The Taura-nga-Tanoatua railway line was damaged, holding u)) train services, and main roads were rendered unsafe at some points. In lower-lying parts of lhe country water reached fence height, causing farmers to remove their stock hastily to higher ground. The rain ceased this afternoon and the water was subsiding to-night. A railway washout occurred between Pongakawa and Pnkehina, about H miles from Te Puke. The line crosses a gully, and a small stream, which iisqpll.v passes through a culvert underneath tlie line, flooded, washing away portion of the embankment and leaving about 30 feet of the lino suspended 25 feet in the air.
