New Superintendent To Wanganui Hospital

A distinguished career qualifies Dr. Hugh L. Widdowson, of Christchurch, for the appointment of medical superintendent of Wanganui Hospital iu succession to Dr. A. D. Nelson. Dr. Widdowson will leave Christchurch to take up his new duties in August. Born in Christchurch, Dr. Widdowson, who is a son of Mr. H. Y. Widdowson, formerly a stipendiary magistrate, was educated at Christ’s College, and later attended the University of Otago. He graduated in 1911, obtaining both the M.B. and Ch.B. degrees. He then travelled to England, where he was appointed senior medical resi-

dent officer to the Cancer Hospital in Fulham’s Road, London. Returning to New Zealand shortly before the cutbreak of the Great War, he went into camp at Treutham in 1914 with the New Zealand Medical Corps. He was sent to Egypt, where be served at the Pont de Koubbeh Hospital for six months, after which he was appointed medical officer to the Auckland Mounted Rifles. With this regiment be served at Gallipoli, Sinai and Palestine. Dr. Widdowson returned to New Zealand -toward the end of 1917, and was appointed a member of the Medical Examination Board, holding the position until the end of the war. In 1919 Dr. 'Widdowson obtained a private practice in Christchurch. A year later, in 1920, be was appointed surgeon at the Christchurch Public Hospital, which position he has retained till the present day. In 1924 he was appointed a medical officer to the Karitane Hospital. He is now the senior medical officer to this hospital, and is also a member of the Medical - Advisory Council to the Plunlret Society.

Dr. Widdowson was elected a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons In 1932. He is married and has three children.
