WOMEN’S HOCKEY

Surprise Defeat of Swifts By Technical Old Girls

CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES

The women’s hockey championship matches were continued on Saturday in sunny weather. The surprise of the day was the defeat of Swifts by Technical Old Girls (1). Swifts were a comparatively new team, the forward line, with the exception of Miss Wilkins, being new aud inexperienced. College Old Girls were too clever for Toa. Ponekc just shaded University, while Hutt United won comfortably against Training College. In a fast, interesting tussle, Technical Old Girls (II) defeated Huia. In the senior B grade Hutt administered to St. Joseph’s their initial defeat. Hutt is now the only unbeaten team in the grade, and they hold a three-point lead from St. Joseph’s. Successes were secured by Wenerei, Technical Old Girls and Upper Ilutt. SENIOR A MATCHES College O.G. Win Easily Contrary to expectations, Toa afforded little resistance to College Old Girls at Karori Park. Taking the displays given by the cx-collegiaus this term it will be surprising if the team does not go very close to, if not annex, the 1936 senior A championship. ’ Toa played fairly well and made some spirited efiprts but the forward line failed badly. In a match that held no frills College Old Girls set a fast pace, and but for penalties on account of “sticks,” which was common to both sides, the contest would have been more interesting. Old Girls showed tbeir superiority aud were always the better combination in all departments, and the final score of eight goals to nil is a good indication of the respective merits of the teams on the day. Scorers for College Old Girls, who led by "four goals to nil at the interval, were Misses 11. Morris (3), J. Yeatman (2), H. McLellan (2) and E. McGill. Mr. E. L. Harris controlled the game admirably. Fast, Keen Ganic. Technical Old Girls (I) aud Swifts provided a fast, keen game at Karori Park, with Technical always tbe better team. Unfortunately for Swifts the team was considerably disorganised, Miss Maddock replacing Miss K. Miller at fullback, and with a line of inexperienced forwards, Miss Wilkins spent an anxious afternoon. On the play, Technical forwards were too nippy and overshadowed tbe championship holders. Technical’s first goal came off the stick of Miss M. Brownlie, being a beautiful circle-edge shot. Swifts endeavoured hard to draw level before the spell, but the score remained unaltered. Resumption saw hard and fast up-and-down play, until Miss R. Thomas increased Technical’s advan-

tage. The pace was telling on Swifts, and the ex-students gradually predominated the game, the final goal going to Miss M. Brownlie. The game ended: Technical Old Girls 3, Swifts 0. Mr. E. L. Harris was the umpire. Success Gained on Merits. Playing at Kilbiruic Technical 01'1 Girls (II) gained a meritorious win over Huia. The game held more than the ordinary run of thrills, and at times it was difficult to say which way the verdict would go. Huia opened well, for within 10 minutes of the commencement the blacks were two up. Before the spell endcil Miew N- Hogan, left wing, netted for Technical, Huia holding the advantage of a goal. It was Huia’a spell, but poor circle work threw away good chances. At the beginning of the second spell Technical tackled smartly. Miss G. Horne netting. Through a nice left wing attack by Miss E. McClelland, Huia took the offensive, but -Miss Stott saved the shot. As tbe game continued Huia showed tiredness, Hie defence weakening. Miss Horne slipped a smart one past Miss E. Cheyne, Miss Campbell being the originator of tbe movement. The next goal went to Technical as the outcome of a scramble. Toward tbe close Huia liecame dangerous, bad circle shooting hampering progress. With Technical Old Girls on the attack time saw the final result Technical O.G. (II) 4, Huia 2. Messrs. H. Tahiwi and S. P. Todd were the umpires. Poneko Shade Varsity. Varsity and Ponekc contested a hard game at Woburn, but it was not. until the second session that Poneke showed up to better advantage. The first goal went to Miss Goldsbury, for Varsity, as the outcome of a goalmouth scramble. This was shortly followed by a penalty bully against Poneke, through the goalkeeper catching a rising ball in tbe hand and throwing it forward. Miss C. Robinson took the bully, but the goalie cleared. Still working hard, Varsity penetrated Poncke’s defence and bliss M. Nelligan scored. Varsity led by 2 goals to nil at the spell. Poneke made several alterations rctsuniption, aud the result was a decided improvement. Taking the ball from haLway, Miss Rielly found the net. Almost immediately the same player repeated her performance, levelling the scores. Varsity spent an anxious time, the goalie being called upon on many occasions to defend, which she did with credit. The next interesting move was made by Varsity, Miss Goldsbury going through to give Varsity the lead. _ Poneke set a fast pace aud in endeavouring to save a sure goal Varsity’s goalkeeper cleared, tbe ball falling to her feet, upon which she closed her feet and obstructed the offensive. The ensuing penalty bully saw Mrs. Newton net and make the scores once again even. Toward the closing stages Mrs. Lowery secured victory for Ponekc oy netting a fine goal, the final score being Poneke 4, Varsity 3. Mr. W. J. Dredge was the umpire. Hutt United Easily. As was to be expected, Hutt United were far too strong for Training College at Woburn, and bad tbe Valley team desired to make a heavy, score the opportunities were tfihre. United piled up the score early, and then seemed to rest on their mettle. United led by four goals to one at the interval, Mrs. F. Sundgren (2) and Miss A. Walker (21 scoring for United, and 3liss Corby for Training College. The seconil half was little better than the finst. Mrs. Sundgren secured a further two goals for United, while Miss Hausman netted for Training College,

the final score being Hutt United 6, Training College 2. Mr. W. J. Dredge was the umpire. SENIOR B GAME Leaders Provide Fast Match Territorially St. Joseph’s held the advantage over Hutt at Woburn, but sound defensive work by the Hutt full-backs and weak efforts of St. Joseph's forwards in the circle helped Hutt considerably The game throughout was fast and thrilling, Hutt in particular giving a fine exhibition. St. Joseph’s defence played well, but tbe tempting traps laid by the Hutt forwards in the circle found tbe goalie wanting. In comparison with some of the exhibitions given in the senior A grade during the season this match was of a much better standard, and both teams are deserving of credit for their efforts, irrespective of the result. Ilutt won by three goals to one. Misses B. Body (2) and T.I. King scored for Ilutt, nnd Miss M. Baillie for St. Joseph's. Mr. R. J. Lloyd was the umpire. LOWER GRADE RESULTS Junior.—Huia 3.
