Brilliant work on the greens enabled J. L. Black (Hutt) to outplay K. V. Jeffery in the match between the No. I's. A birdie 2 at the short sixth, and a birdie 3 at the tenth (365 yards) against the north-westerly breeze were factors that turned the tables. Both took 39 for the out journey, Black heading for home 1 up. Black came back in 3S, which gave him 77 to the round, while Jeffery took one more stroke for the full journey. Neither man was at bis best, considering that teeing up was permitted on several of the fairways. Bryan Silk (Hutt) started off iu brilliant form, and gave Max Moore hardly a look-in, reeling off 4,3, 4,3, 4, 3 as an opening burst. Out in 37, Silk had a commanding lead at the turn, and took the match by 7 and 5. Harold Black (.Miramar) showed that bis recent spell from the game bad done him good. Doing the out journey in 37, be was 2 up on Guy Horne, and toon the game by 3 and 1. Colin Armstrong (Hutt) won Hie first five boles iu a row from J. Shelly. Out in 36 he was 5 up at the turn. He took 40 for the run home, taking the match by 5 and 4. It was only a miraculous niblick pitch at the eighteenth which enabled Rana Wagg (Hutt) to defeat J. H. Drake by the narrowest possible margin. The Hutt man was iu the drain with his second shot, and his ball lay up against an iron water-pipe. Wagg crashed down on to ball and pipe, and iris ball pulled up close enough to the pin to enable him to win the hole and the match. It was a good win after he had been 2 down with 3 to play. D. S. Halley was the only other Miramar player, besides Harold Black, to record a win. He was very steady in defeating G. N. Tustin by 3 and 2. C. E. Hollis, H. E. H. Aplin, and V. E. Sutherland managed to square their matches, but here Miramar's success stopped. The Hutt team’s success was al] the more meritorious by reason of the fact that they were playing away from home.
