FINAL APPEAL

Parties in Pukeko Case

NOTES AND COMMENTS

Clarion Call Not Going To Melbourne

(Bi-

The Watcher.)

B. Burgess and A. Jenkins both intend to appeal to the judges of the New Zealand Racing Conference against their disqualification in connection with the L’ukeko case at Auckland

Clarion Call. L. G. Morris, who returned home from Ellerslie with Clarion Call after the second day’s racing, was at Otaki on Saturday. An Auckland report stated that Clarion Call was likely to go to Melbourne. but Morris states this is incorrect. There is no such intention. Clarion Call will race next at Wanganui, where be has been entered for flat events.

Calydon as a Jumper. The ex-New Zealander Calydon has been backed for the V.R.C. Grand National Hurdle Race. Calydon, who has been disappointing since he arrived in Victoria, was backed from the stable, so possibly he is on the verge of better things.

Wanganui Entries. The nominations for the winter meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club are fewer in number than was the case last year, when the meeting was held five weeks earlier, prior to the Auckland Racing Club's Great Northern meeting, and the casualties at Ellerslie are reflected in the absence from the entry lists of several well-known ’chasers and hurdlers. E>r the Wanganui Steeplechase the entries total seventeen, as compared with fifteen last year and sixteen the year before. The hurdlers entered for the Century Hurdle Race number eleven, as against last year’s total of fifteen. Quality, however, is well represented.

Betting at Hastings. The win-and-place system of betting has been discarded by the Hawke's Ray Jockey Club, and single pool will operate at the meeting this week. The decision was made after receiving a deputation from local owners.

Bred in New Zealand. At the AV estern Australian Turf Club's meeting on June 1 the hurdle race was won by the ex-Trentham gelding Zephyrus (Weathervane —-Nada). Zephyrus started at double figures, and won by half a head. Change of Stables.

Mr. Sol Green’s horses have been transferred from L. Robertson to D. J. Price. Alaric, Springbok. Bravest, and Stevenage were sent Io Price’s stable at Caulfield last week, but tire yearlings, owned by Mr. Green, will remain for a while with B. Price, son of the Caulfield trainer, at Mordialloe. Robertson, who had a remarkable time with his horses during the spring carnivals in Melbourne last yea*, has trained horses for Mr. Green for many years. The move bns created a .sensation in Victorian racing circles. Schooling at Hastings.

. -At.Hastings on Saturday morning Journet (E. Deslandes) and Emotion (J. Walsh) gave a good display of hurdling over six obstacles, the once round being timed to be run in 1.44. Cotslield (W. Gomm) and Kaokaoroa (E. Deslandes) were sent out over the country, nnd with the former acting as pacemaker all the way the pair gave a clever and thorough display of leaping. Cotslield is a very fit horse. Beau Star was given ago over the big fences, too, but performed poorly.

Tito Two Cups. Entries for this year's Melbourne Cup are 281, compared with 241 last year, and for the Caulfield Cup 2(17 as against 238. The nominations for Australia’s big spring races are, all round, the best for five years.

Extraordinary. The recent meeting of the Auckland Racing Club will be historical from the

unprecedented nature of the going. Probably it will never be seen again. A mile in 1.37 and six in 1.12 1-5 (under 10.3) is extraordinary for mid-winter. The usual run of winter horse has been up ngaiiiHt it wo far, but his turn must be soon due, and heavy tracks will probably sec some reversals of recent form.

Classic Entries. Friday of this week is an important day for breeders and owners. Entries close on that, day for the future daseics of the various clubs in New Zealand with such races on their programmes.

Shifting Quarters. Owner-trainer J. D. Lambess. who has been located for some time at Otaki, where he trained Eminent with success, is shifting to Tauherenikau, and will train in future on the Wnirarapa cour.-’c. He has a rising three-year-old colt by Lackham from Royal Queen named Diamond Cutter in work. Another Start.

Ebb Simpson has made another start with Liane. Ayresleiglt is to be given a trial over hurdles.

Doubtful Prospect. T’hurina is a daily visitor to the tracks at Riecarton. He is muscling up well on the miles of useful pace work be gets, chiefly in the centre of the course. In the meantime he is sound, but it is too early yet to say that he is likely to stand up to more strenuous tasks.

Brabant in Again. 11. Telford has brought Brabant tn again. The Vaals colt is looking well after his spell.

Royal Liinond. Royal Limond has had an enlarged knee since his full in the Great Northern Steeplechase, which • accounts for his absence from the Winter Steeplechase field on Saturday.

Good Family. Treasurer, the latest addition to the team of H. Nurse, is a yearling colt by Paper Money from Sweet Beauty, so he comes from the same family .ns Polydorn and Rebel Star. Hr is a very attractive youngster and ho will be got readv to race for Mr. G. Hall.

Vintage Sound Again. Vintage is being hacked about on his owner's farm, preparatory to being put into training, lie is said to be quite sound again.

Yeanlings for Australia. Eleven Australian-owned yearlings that: linve been broken in hero since the January sales (seven from Trciithani and four from Elderslie) are to be shipped to their miners on Hie next direct steamer.

Luck Did Not Hold. Mi'. R. T. Reid, of Hamilton, may have boon accounted very fortunate when he won the Great Northern Hurdles with Prince of Orange (No. 13 on the card and at the barrier), but bio luck has not held. Early last week his two-year-old Queen's Counsel died, and Prince of Orange went amiss while contesting the Remuera Hurdles on Wednesday. Queen’s Counsel was an attractive chestnut filly by Chief Ruler from the imported mare Legality, and was bred by her owner. She won the Midsummer Handicap nt the Ellerslie summer meeting. and al her last start was third to Birthday Party and Philemup in the Nursery Handicap at Avondale,

in which she did not get. away well. Queen's Counsel was very promising. Vinco Out of Hacks. Vinco put himself out of hacks with his win at Otaki on Saturday. Vinco's form at his best is not bad, but he will have to produce it more often to pay his way in open company. Southdown. A. McAulay is giving Southdown no more than easy tasks at present, but hopes to have him ready to race in August, provided the conditions arc favourable, as he requires a firm track. He won at. Ashburton in December, that being his last appearance. The Millionaire’s Mite. It is estimated that the Aga Khans studs and houses in training are worth about £1,000,000. His income is set down at about £600,000 a year, and his investments run into millions. When he was single the Aga Khan used £BO per day in pocket money, but he does’,not gamble. Related to Billy Boy. j Lady England is the name claimed for the four-year-old mare by Little England from Lady Comet, the half-sister to Billy Boy. Lady England is the first surviving foal of Lady Comet and, beiug bred from jumping blood entirely, she has everything in her favour for a successful career. Lady England was bred by Mr. B. Brewer and is owned by Mrs. P. D. Holmes. Four Oaks Winners. It is probably a unique circumstance for four Oaks winners to be at the same stud. At Ladbrooks, where Nightmarch is standing, Mr. A. Louisson has Starmist. Pride, Praise and Variant, the lastnamed having just been retired to the paddock.
