“FRAMING” BY POLICE ALLEGED
Sydney Inquiry Evidence (Received May 29, 8.20 p.m.) Sydney, May 29. The Royal Commissioner, Judge Mar kel), on betting raids and police methods in connection with them is at present taking the evidence of Ernest Howe, who alleges that he was “framed,” that, betting slips stolen from the files of the Police Department were “planted” on him after hi« arrest, and that he was struck by a constable and also “booted” across the room by a sergeant in an effort to compel him to make a statement. Tlie police involved were Sergeant Christensen. Constables Donnelly and Grant, and a police agent, Kevin Lynch. Howe stated that a magistrate dismissed a charge of illegal betting against him, whereupon the police told him they would get oven with him later. A week later lie was again arrestor! and fined £2O, although he persisted he was innocent.
