Parliament NEW POLICY ON MORTGAGES
Debate on State Advances Corporation Bill NO SERIOUS OBJECTION RAISED Good Progress Earns Long Week-end Adjournment Although urgency was not taken for the State Advances Corporation Bill in the House of Representatives yesterday members at the end of the day showed a tangible result for thenwork. One of the most important Bills was given its second reading, and at no point in the debate was there any evidence of hostile opposition. Members of the Opposition made it clear that they had no serious objection to the measure, although they frankly ad- . mitted that on some points there was reason for criticism. The debate was thus friendly rather than destructively critical. There was nd dearth of opinion, however, and, including the reply of the Minister of Finance. Hon. W. Nash, no fewer than 10 speeches were made on the Bill, five by Government members and five from the Opposition benches. In view of the progress made the adjournment was taken half an hour earlier than the schedule time and the House rose just before 5 p.m. The progress made in the House during the week apparently was considered to be so satisfactory that, contrary to general expectations, the members were given a long week-end adjournment. There will be no sitting on Monday, and when the House resumes on Tuesday afternoon members will be given an opportunity to discuss the report of the Director of Education, Mr. N. T. Lambourne, on his recent visit to the Old World. On Tuesday evening the State Advances Corporation Bill will be considered in its committee stage, and for two hours the speeches will be broadcast.
Cabinet will hold a fairly long meeting to-day and will sit again on Monday.
