Reports of Monthly i Gatherings CARTERTON ACTIVITIES There was the usual large attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Carterton Women's Institute, the president, Miss O. Wolters, being in the chair. Thanks were extended by the president to all who assisted in making the Birthday Party such a success, A request was made for members to again make peggy squares. ' An iuteresyng report on the haltycarly council meeting was read by the delegate, Mrs. A. Pink. Competition results for the mouth were:—Bottled fruit: Mrs. R. Tankersley 1. Mrs. L. L. Harding 2. Jelly: Mrs. Deller 1, Mrs. Tankersley 2, Mrs. J. McKenzie 3. Mrs. V. Foster, Masterton, demonstrated the making of loose covers, and was presented with a shoulder spray. Mrs. G. E. Allen, for acting as judge for competitions was also presented with a shoulder spray. Afternoon tea was served. Elstliorpo. The sixth birthday of the Elsthorpe Women’s Institute was celebrated this month when members entertained the menfolk at a concert and social evening. Mrs. Taylor, who organised the concert, received an ovation for her splendid effort. A birthday cake was given by a member and cut by the president. At the usual monthly meeting it was decided to send a delegate to the annual general meeting at Dunedin. A purchase of books was made for the institute library. There was a handkerchief competition for which several beautifully embroidered specimens were submitted. It was hard to believe that they had been made from the humble salt bag. The handkerchiefs were afterward presented to the president. Gifts of jam were brought for the children’s home. Roikorangi-Waikanae. The monthly mcetiusg of the Reikor-rangi-aWikanae Womens’ Institute was held recently at Waikanae. Ms. G. A. Mnok presided over a good attendance. During the afternoon members wer eaddressde by Miss Hooper, Wellington, on the Plunket system. A competition for the best hand-made jug-cover was won by Miss E. Smith with Miss Stabbings second, and Mrs. Meyer third, and that for the best hand-made handkerchief resulted in a tie for first place by Misses E. Smith and J. Clifton. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs. T. Brown and Mrs. Wilson. Tuai. The Tuai Women’s Institute held their monthly meeting recently with an attendance of 27 and one visitor. A new member was welcomed. Th sewing competition, a garment to be given to the poor, was won by Mrs. Godman and Mrs. Munro and Mrs. Frame tied for second. For cheese straws, Mrs. Jones was first and Mrs. McDonald second. A debate was held, the subject being that winter is better than summer. Mesdamcs McDonald, Alford, Munro, Foley spoke for winter, and Mesdamcs Chatfield, Jones, McClymout, Rosenberg for summer, resulting in a win for sum.met by two points. A treasure hunt was popular, Mrs. Chatfield presiding at. the piano and Mesdamcs Symons, Godman apd Waring being the winners. The supper hostesses were Mesdamcs Chatfield, Foley and Gordon. Kakaunui. The monthly meeting of the Rakaunui Women’s Institute took place at the residence of Mrs. Woodhouse. Mrs. Woodhouse presided and welcomed one new member. It was decided that each member was to bring two novels to the meeting next month to be exchanged for others and so form a reading circle for the winter months. A competition entitled “Nursery Rhymes” was much enjoyed, and a rollcall, “The Most Novel and Useful Kitchen Utensil,” inteiMed all present. The half-yearly competition, smocking, was won by Mrs. Roskill, Mrs. A. Roskell gaining second place. After afternoon tea Mrs. Rankin gave a short talk’ on “Home Nursing.” Mauakau.

The May meeting of the Manakau Women’s institute was held recently. Mrs. Willis presided and welcomed several old members and friends. Mrs. White, Otaki, gave a demonstration on binding and exhibited a display of thrifty homemade gifts. Four new members were welcomed. The competition, best article made from one yard of print, was won by Sirs. Bert Robinson, with Mrs. Hili second. ' Mrs. A,. Bryant read the report of the federation meeting held at Paraparaumu. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mes-

dames Dorsett, Dalzell, Green, Guerin, Misses Colville and U. Cotter. Olungaiti. The May meeting of the Ohingaiti Women’s Institute was well attended. Five visitors from Wanganui were present. The remits for conference were rend and discussed. An interesting demonstration on posymaking and gift box of flowers was given by Mrs. Shanks, Wanganui, who was accorded a vote of thanks. Mrs. MeKnight contributed a humorous item. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdamcs James and Weston and Miss E. Hammond. Tho competition for best bowl of chrysanthemums was won by Mrs. Weston, with Mrs. Pritchard second and Mrs. McCulloek third.
