SUCCESSFUL DANCE

Close of Athletic Queen Carnival The Athletic Queen Carnival, which has been in progress throughout, this year, was brought to a most successful termination with a dance, held at St. Francis Hall. Hill Street. last night, when the successful candidate was crowned. The queen carnival has aroused much interest and enthusiasm, and a most gratifying sum will be handed over to the Wellington Amateur Athletic Association as a result, of muqli hard work and keen competition on the part of the candidates and their supportcis. The crowning ceremony last night was a very picturesque one, and I lie striking red and gold decorations of St. Francis Hall provided a fittingly regal background. The candidate who gained the highest number o£ votes, Miss Thelma Greenfield, representing the Hutt Valley, was crowned queen of the carnival after a grand march round the hall, attended by the three other candidates as maids of honour. 'They all wore charming frocks and long trains falling from the shoulders, and each had her retinue of small pages, the whole effect being a colourful and attractive one. The other candidates were Miss Phyllis Resnick (for the Wellington Harriers and Athletic Club) ; Miss Hazel Martin (Kiwi and Old Boys’ Club) ; and Miss Margaret Brownlee (Wellington Athletic and Scottish Harriers’ Club). .Mrs. W. E. Barnard, who was wearing moonlight blue faille, and Mrs. W. Nash, wearing black lace, acted D hostesses for the evening. The parcuts of the four candidates were guests, of honour.

Au orchestra supplied bright and appropriate music for dancing, which was interspersed with clever items by some young dancing students. A buffet supper was set on the long tables in the supper room, and a “bar” for claret cup was a popular meeting place between dances.

The committee, who are to be congratulated on the excellent arrangements, were Mr. Bell, who was M.C., .Mr. R. Spence. Mesdamgs O’Brien, Tasker, R. Spence, Jenkins and Weston.
