EXCITING GOLF AT ST. ANDREWS

Play in Bad Conditions FERRIER HAS DESPERATE STRUGGLE By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, May 27. A howling icy wind from the sea made conditions at St. Andrews utterly wretched for to-day’s play in the second and third rounds of the British amateur golf championship, and every hole played differently. Golfers were wrapped up as if it was mid-winter. It was St. Andrews in its sternest mood and the conditions obviously meant that many unaccustomed to such severity would be blown out of the championship. The first: sensation of the day was Tolley’s lapse against the Welshman Roberts. Tolley went out with a majestic 36 and there was then a land slide in Roberts’s favour. Tolley went all to pieces. Roberts, by taking three putts at the seventeenth, permitted Tol ley to square the match. Tolley missed a 3ft putt at the eighteenth but at the nineteenth sank a seven-yarder for tlie match. A great crowd accompanied Ferrier (Australia) against Braddon, a mem her of the advertising staff of a London evening newspaper, who was essaying his first championship. He plays a beautiful ball and is very accurate in his approach play. Both went out in 38 and turned all square. Ferrier lost the next three holes, being off the line with his drives, but won the next two through Braddon taking three putts at each green. Ferrier holed a t’ourvnrder at tlie fifteenth and a three yarder at the sixteenth, getting halves and downed a four-yarder at the seventeenth, squaring the match. The eighteenth was halved when Ferrier failed to sink a three-yarder. Critical Last Hole. Both had magnificent drives at the nineteenth and botli had superb seconds to within four yards from the pin. Ferrier had the first putt and laid the ball just on the edge of rhe hole. Braddon seemed nervous and took three putts of short distances, so that Ferrier won. He was visibly showing signs of strain. lie said: “It was a desperate struggle, and I was lucky to get through.” The Scottish champion, Hamilton, went down to the former Oxford champion Morrice. Tlie English champion. Bentley, had a very tough fight to beat the Irishman Gill. The defeat of Jack McLean in the fourth round was most surprising. Sweeny, a London-American, was 3 up at the eleventh, and was then dormy 2. McLean won the last two and halved the nineteenth, but Sweeny won the twentieth. Dr. Tweddel’s defeat was also surprising as he has just been chosen as captain of the British Walker Cup team against America. Thomson played brilliantly and was five under 4’s for the sixteen holes. Ferrier gave a magnificent display against Howell, who has eight times been the Welsh champion. The Aus traliah simply overwhelmed the Welshman, driving with enormous length and with his second shots covering the pin. Ferrier was out in 34, bis figures being 434444-134, and turned 5 up. He did the next four holes in 4344. Howell made some slips, occasionally taking three putts, but was devastated by his opponent’s finer golf. Third Round.
