NEARLY HALF MILLION INCREASE

Post Office Revenue GAINS SHOWN BY ALL SECTIONS "Revenue results for tlie last, financial year show how (lie Post Office, which reflects in its activities the general condition of business in Ute Dominion, is climbing out of the depression period in a highly satisfactory manner,” stated the Postnuister-Genera! (Hon. F. Jones) to “The Dominion” yesterday.

“The gross revenue for the year ended March 31," be continued, "was £3.652,519, which was £222.296 above Hie gross revenue for 1935. It is interesting to know the influence on the department, of the long period of economic depression, for last year's receipts are only £552,000 in excess of the total of ten years ago. though at the rate of last year’s progress Post Office revenue should soon pass the £4,000,000 mark. The main sources of revenue for the past year, with the corresponding figures for 1935, were as ■follow

“That the course of business through the channels provided by the Post Office has materially changed during the last ten years is shown by the fact that in 1926 the revenue from telegrams was actually £108.060 greater than for the year ended March 31, 1936. But the Post Office has not lost on this movement, because during the same period telephone and toll revenue has increased by £427,669.” Commercial telegraph business during the past year demonstrated the improvement in general conditions by showing an increase of 11.29 per cent, in volume, while the revenue improved to the extent of 4.64, a smaller proportion, due to the concessions made in rates, said Mr. Jones. There was a similar disparity between the increased volume (15.95 per cent.) of the telephone toll traffic and the increased return to tthe department (11.43 per cent.), due to the service being provided to the user at a lower cost for each transaction.
