WORK ON SUNDAYS AND HOLIDAYS

Overtime Pay FACTORIES BILL PROVISION Applicable to All Workers The provision of the Factories Amendment Bill with regard to the payment of overtime to workers engaged ou Sundays or statutory holidays is to apply to all workers, irrespective of whether or not their employment normally entails work on these days. This was made clear by the Minister of Labour, Hon. 11. T. Armstrong, in an interview last night. It was pointed out to the Minister that there was some difference of opinion in the matter. In the case of workers who were employed under conditions that normally did not require them to work on Sundays or holidays, work on such days was overtime for which payment was made in addition to weekly wages. However, there were workers in a number of other industries who normally worked on Sundays or holidays, but received equivalent holidays ou other days or some other form of compensation. Mr. Armstrong was asked whether the Government intended that the payment to the second class of workers should be the ordinary weekly wages prescribed In the awards or the triple wages prescribed in the Bill for Sunday and holiday work. Would the Bill in their case permit the substitution of other holidays for Sundays and holidays? “The provision under the Bill is that all workers must be paid the extra rates if they are employed on Sundays or holidays.” Mr. Armstrong said. “■Women and boys are definitely prohibited from being employed on Sundays or statutory holidays, but in the case of all male adult workers the overtime rates will apply.”
