Demand For Relief For Ex-Servicemen Wanganui, May 20. The annual meeting this evening of the Wanganui branch of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association was well attended, the president, Mr. W. 11. Cannan, presiding. The annual report stated that there had been large increases in membership during the past year., but there were 250 men on relief works. Funds handled by the association provided for £650, which with subsidies benefited the men to the extent of approximately £l3OO. The balance-sheet showed a sound financial position, the year ending with a credit balance of £251/13/10. The election of officers resulted as follows :—Patron, Mr. E. IV. Merewether (re-elected); president, Mr. IV. 11. Cannan (re-elected); vice-presidents. Messrs. F. I). Glasgow and R. G. Taiboys (reelected) ; general committee, Messrs. A. Phillips, C. S. Brown, It. Howell, If. M. Keesing. E. J. Orchard. A. V. Martin, N. Tyler and R. L. Thonipson (re-elected t. Th following resolution was passed a.s a remit to the next general conference: “That this branch of the Wanganui Returned Soldiers’ Association asserts that if the public credit of New Zealand can be used for the purpose of creating public works, then the public credit of New Zealand can be drawn upon to provide a decent standard of living for all disabled ex-servicemen who are unable adequately to support themselves. These requirements to be made to all ex-servicemen, irrespective of age or date of service, and that the .only means test to be applied to be flint the applicant is not in receipt of an income at least equivalent to that of Hi., average public works employee. These payments to be made unalienable and direct fo recipient through the post office in the form of a dividend to be treated as a right, not as charity.”
