STRUCK WITH KNIFE
Extreme Provocation By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, May 20. George Burns, a married man, charged with assaulting George Cann, a boarder in his house, was foun>d guilty b.v the jury to-day of assault, causing actual bodily harm. Prisoner was admitted to probation by Mr. Justice Smith ami ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution. The trial arose from happenings which occurred on the night of April 17 last, when Cann was admitted to hospital suffering from a severe wound in the right arm.
Mr. J. Hussey, defendant's, counsel, who set tip a defence of provocation, stressed that Cann had caused an estrangement between Burns, his wife and the family, and Burns had at last “boiled over.’’
Burns made a statement from the dock that he had had four years’ war service and it had "all came back to him." He lost his head and struck Cann with a knife. The jury returned with a verdict of guilty under extreme provocation and recommended prisoner to mercy.
