SNOWFALL ON EVEREST
Party’s Progress Held Up London, May 18. A copyright message from Mr. Hugh Ruttledge, leader of the Everest Expedition. states that heavy snow Interrupted Messrs. Smythe and .Shipton as they were advancing from Camp 4, 15 inches falling on the north col. The roar of the avalanches from the north-east shoulder of Mount Everest wus often audible on Sunday. The north col was reported to he unsafe perhaps for two days. Slabs on the upper part of the mountain were nnelinibable when covered with snow, but the violent wind was tearing new snow from the mountain, giving hope of early resumption of the advance. The party on the north col is comfortable, with plenty of food.
