Socialism at the Gate
Sir,—Apparently of the 2GO definitions by Socialist writers on Socialism, your correspondejit, the New Zealand Welfare League, has not yet satisfied itself as, to the correct definition of Socialism. The following figures ate reproduced from a table of official figures issued by the League of Nations in its monthly bulletin of statistics for May, 1935:—
Denmark has had a Socialist Government with Radical support (Socialist 62, Radicals 14) since 1929. The Russian figures show that in three years the industrial output has a good deal more than doubled. And even the Russian results have not been secured at once by revolution. They are the product of gradual, steady progress in equipment, education, technical training, and the turning of all surpluses back into the National Pool, instead of, as in capitalist countries, inventing the surpluses abroad. So much for Socialism. What now has the New Zealand Welfare League to offer in sunport of the present capitalistic system?—l am, etc.. R. K. McDONELL. Levin, May 14.
