CHURCH CENTENARY
Consecration of Pioneer Australian Bishop (Received May IS, 11.30 p.m.) Sydney, May 18. To take part in the Bishop Broughton centenary celebrations, Archbishop Averill, Primate of New Zealand, arrived by the Monterey. Visitors to Sydney for the celebrations, which mark the centenary of the consecration of Bishop Broughton, the first Anglican Bishop of Australia, include Dr. Charles F. Darcy, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland; Dr. Foss Westcott, Bishop of Calcutta; Dr. Y. P. Matsui, Bishop of Tokio; Dr. G. Graham Brown, Bishop of Jerusalem; the Rt. Rev. W. G. Hilliard, Bishop of Nelson; the Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett, Bishop of Aotea-roa; Professor J. R. Elder. Otago Unvlerslty; Dr. H. F. Le ’Fann, Archbishop of Perth and Primate of Australia, and a large gathering of archbishops and bishops from all parts of Australia. The celebrations will begin on May 24 with special services in all Anglican churches and will conclude on Sunday, June 7, with thanksgiving services. The official programme includes a church congress, a missionary exhibition, pilgrimages to Broughton churches, a demonstration by Sunday school children at the Sydney showground, historical and diocesan festivals, and a commemorative service at. St. James’s Church, Sydney, marking the anniversary of the installation of Bishop Broughton on June 5. 1836.
