NELSON TROTS

Keen Racing and Close Finishes TOTALISATOR INCREASE Dominion Special Service. Nelson. May 18. A remarkable feature of the Nelson Trotting Club’s meeting which concluded to-day was that although the attendance was not as large as on Saturday, the lotalisator investments were larger, totalling £5!)!)G. The total for the two days was £ll,-19-1. The racing was very interesting and provided many keen finishes. Great Chum won the chief event, while the mile also went to a Hutt Park-trained candidate, .Allworthy, who established a track record of 2.12. Winnie Parrish and Passport were the only horses to win each day. Tan John Improves. Showing improvement on his first day form, Tan John won the Pioneer Handicap by a neck from the favourite, Count Parrish. Margaret Parrish was in front at the distance, but broke, and Wrackless finished on in third place ahead of Corrtanda, when going like a whiner. In the Waimea Handicap the favourite, Passport, broke badly at the top, but came fast over the final stages to get within half a length of Major Guy, who led all the way. Loyal Avis, a threc-ycar-old filly by Grattan Loyal Necessity made a creditable showing for third money. Passport’s lapse occurred in exactly the same place as in his first race on Saturday. Ideal Fails. Adopting different tactics to when he won the big race ou Saturday, L. O. Thomas took Ideal to the front three furlongs from home in the President s Handicap, but after going -1.32 Ideal was beaten into third place. Epilogue led for over a mile and a half, and when Ideal took charge he was followed by Superb. Great Chum, and Grand Author. In a great finish Great Chum bent Superb a head. Grand Author was fourth, with Deeoy Bird and Hidden Charm next. The winner paid double figures, and was patiently handled by S. M. August. Shoelace, owned by the Hon. G. L. Hunter, was a firm fancy for the Appleby Handicap, and alter going away slowly from the extreme outside she ran to the front to win all the way. At the turn Real Pal, Brian Born, Lady Ann, I* irst Royal. Travis, and Dandy Locanda (very wide out) were in a bunch, but Real Pul did liest to get second from Brian Born, with First Aid and Lady Ann next. Winue I’arrish, the holiest favourite of the meeting, won the Tasman Handicap easily from the consistent Count larrish. who paid a much better price than the winner. Nothing had a chance with the first, and second horses over the last half-mile. . Making no mistakes and patiently driven by A. G. Kearns. Passport repeated his first, day performance by winning nicely at his second start, the Richmond Handicap. Buddy tried to win from end to end, and was a long way in front three furlongs from home; he tired but hung on to boat Brian Born for second place. Real Pul opened up a big gap in the Farewell Handicap, and tried to win all the way. lie weakened in the final furlong, and was beaten by Allworthy, who was assisted by a good beginning and a nice run.
