Wainui-o-mata Tunnel
Sir—The Public Works scheme under the aegis of Mr. Semple looks as if New Zealand is going to see something done at last. I remember the big headlines when Mr Coates first became Minister ot Public Works. Everything was going to be done, with up-to-date machinery. Me all know what happened, Air. Coates dropped the portfolio pt Public Works and the scheme ended in smoke. Let us hope that Mr. Semple will tackle the 'Wainui-o-matn tunnel. A syndicate has done some 18 chains of the total ‘l9 chains an<l lias now ceased practicallv all activity. It: is a waste of mone'v to lot this uncompleted work lie idle. ' The Government should take over the scheme and complete the tunnel, because it will eventually lead to, opening up the lower end of the Wmrarapa. Valley and the completion of the coastal The completion of the tunnel, will improve the land values mid the increased tax revenue will pay the Government handsomclv. especially with the addition of the graduated land tax.' Opening up this country will increase the population in the Wainui and Orongorongo districts We want closer settlement and the completion of the Wainui-o-mnta tunnel is pein- to give Wellington tins fillip to closer settlement .—I am, etc..
