Special Committee Proposed A number of remits dealing with tlie compilation of text-books for use. in primary schools were adopted by the New Zealand Educational Institute's annual conference. On the motion of Mr. F. 1,. Combs, seconded by Air. L. B. Galbraith, it was resolved—" That the Alinister of Education set up an advisory committee of five, including two nominees of the Education Department ami two of tlie institute, and that there should he appointed tt permanent, officer: Ibis officer, in addition to oilier duties, to act as chairman of the text-book committee.” An amendment liy Air. Al. Riske. seconded by Air. J. Another motion by Air. Combs—- “ That after consultation witli the committee the permanent officer, subject to the control and direction of the Alinister, take steps to engage writers, to secure suggestions, and generally to plan tlie text-books in regard to liotli contents and treatment,’’ was carried. If was then decided on tlie motion of Air. Combs, seconded h.v Aiiss Al. E. .McGill, that the committee thus set up be given at least a year to investigate and to prepare tlie text-books for publication. Finally .Miss K. Turner seconded tlie following motion h.v Mr. Combs, which was also carried: “That Hie committee take into consideration (he preparation of text-books of arithmetic, Englisli language and spelling with a section for .Maori words, literature, geography and history for till classes from standard I to form 3: also that this be considered as a policy for the '.School Journal’ and school libraries."
