LEVY MADE ON WOOL
Australian Research Fund Canberra, May 15. A levy of 6d. per bale on all wool grown in Australia has been fixed by the Federal Government in its plan for wool research and publicity. The levy is expected to yield £60,000 a year. It was announced laet week that the Federal Government had decided to impose a sales tax of not more than 1/- per bale on wool 'to provide a research and publicity fund. The chief purpose of the fund will be to combat the menace in overseas markets of artificial wool and wool substitutes. In making • the announcement, the Prime Minister, Mr. J. A. Lyons, said that the Government proposed to collect the levy from growers and to pay it over to accredited representatives of the industry. A wool researcli and publicity committee which was to be set up would work in association with similar New Zealand. South African and United Kingdom organisations.
