10,000 TREES ALONG HUTT ROAD

Beautifying Society’s Aim PLANTING PROPOSED FOR THIS YEAR The planting of 10,000 trees along the western side of the Hutt Road is one of the aims of the Wellington Beautifying Association this year, states the first annual report of the society. Trees are also to be planted along the Marine Drive at Point Halswell, at Brooklyn, and at Happy Valley. A gift of £l5 has been made to the society by the Brooklyn Electors’ Association; this is to be supplemented from the society’s funds for the planting at Brooklyn and Happy Valley. The Marine Drive, it is hoped, will be so beautified that it will be a part of the city of which citizens may be proud. Though the society was not formed until the 1935 planting season was well advanced, good work was done before its close. Alongside the Hutt Road 5800 trees were planted; 114 trees were planted by children under the “Plant-your-own-tree” scheme, and a start was made with the planting of the island off Island Bay and with the rhododendron dell, where there are now. 100 choice plants, many of which were given to the society. Last year the society received £325 from gifts and membership fees, and it is the hope of the executive that this amount wil] be substantially increased The report states that in a city of Wellington’s size the society should be able to raise £5OO quite comfortably. Wellington people now living elsewhere have been generous with their gifts and recently n man living at Dargaville sent £3/3/- to assist the society’s work The report also states that it is proposed to have a planting day this year to mark the beginning of the planting season. Every member of the society will be given the opportunity of planting a tree. The date will be at the end of this month or at the beginning of next.
