FIRE IN STEAMER
Damage to Jervis Bay (Received May 14, 10.15 p.m.) Newcastle, May 14. A fire in the Aberdeen and Com monwealth steamer Jervis Bay, berthed at Newcastle, extensively damaged the saloon, galley and starboard pantr? while minor damage occurred in the mess-room and butcher’s shop amidships. Dense smoke hampered the crew’s efforts to arrest the outbreak with chemical extinguishers, but when lire brigades arrived and used smoke helmets the lire was soon under control. Steam pipes burst and some members of the crew were burned. The Jervis Bay, loaded will) frozen cargo from Brisbane, arrived to-day en route for the United Kingdom.
