WORK FOR THE WEEK
The Flower Garden Slugs arc to be found sheltering among weeds and rubbish. Remove the shelter and you'll have fewer pests. Lift, divide and replant all herbaceous perennials. Plant out lilies in rich but well-drained soil. Remember that most lilies prefer semi-shade and bate lime. Roses and all flowering shrqbs can now be planted. Diseased and dying foliage of bearded irises harbours disease spores over the winter. It. should be (removed and burned. Gladioli are now ready for lifting. Dry off, clean and store in a cool, dry room. Sow seed of all hardy annuals and perennials. Perennial lupins can be sown or planted now. Purchase some of the new shades, including orange and lavender. Waterlilies and peonies should be planted in May or June. The Vegetable Garden Earth up leeks and celery. Make a sowing of onions for pulling in spring. Transplant seedlings and thin out overcrowded rows. Plant cabbage, broad beans and cos lettuce. Enrich rhubarb beds with old farmyard manure. Plant garlic and shallots. Strawberries can now be planted out. Plant raspberries, black currants and gooseberries. Prepare soil for the planting out of all fruit trees. June is the best month for planting, but soil should be prepared some weeks in advance. Thin out seedling crops as growth increases. Keep the soil well aerated by frequent hoeings and destroy all rubbish.
