CITY’S MEAT SUPPLY
Increase in Supplies From Outside NEED FOR SUPERVISION "Our present method of checking meat coming into the city is inadequate,’’ said the abattoir manager, Mr. M. M. MacDonald, in his annual report presented at the meeting of the Wellington City Council last night “We see only a very small fraction of the meat coining in; therefore returns depend on the honesty of the meat vendors. The 'method of transporting this meat into the city is in some instances crude and should be looked into. Large transport lorries go past this abattoir with uncovered meat which has been conveyed long distances in this condition. Probably similar conditions exist on the Wairarapa route. • “Much more municipal control is necessary regarding meat, both from a financial and a health standpoint. If a clearing depot were established for all meat coming into the city, with a city inspector and perhaps a Department of Agriculture inspector in attendance, it would in my opinion solve the problem. The increase in the importation of meat into the city during the past few years warrants something more practicable than is being done at present in the matter of supervision." The report showed a decrease in all classes of stock slaughtered during the year ended March 31 last, except sheep. There was not a corresponding increase from the returns furnished in respect of meat killed outside the city abattoir. “In my opinion this is a matter the council should investigate at its earliest opportunity,” Mr. MacDonald -said. “More meat is coming into the city from outside sources and fewer returns are being made.” The manager reported that building work done during the year had been a great improvement from a hygienic point of view as well as from the convenience afforded through the increased accommodation. The report was adopted without discussion.
