Attention is to be directed by the New Zealand Secondary Schools Association to the desirability of instituting some form of training in the appreciation of films. It was agreed at the conference of the association in Wellington yesterday that a good deal of the attention previously devoted by secondary school pupils to books had been transferred to the cinema, and that training in appreciation would be a practical method of meeting this trend. A sub-committee was set up by the association to explain the proposal.
A new type of postal franking, a sample of which was received by mail yesterday, has been adopted in the United States. It consists of a sticker, three inches long by about an inch and a quarter wide. This is perforated like a postage stamp and can be stuck to a package. It is of pale yellow paper with a distinctive green marl: ing, superimposed on which in purple ink is the symbol “U S Postage,” then “P B Meter No 90765. April 12, .’36 New York N.Y., Amount paid 281.” This legend is printed in clear capitals and the sticker goes forward undefaced by any form of cancellation.
“The continuation of these sole charge schools is one of the most degenerate and antique methods of education that one could possibly obtain,’ said Mr. W. A. T. Underwood (North Auckland) in advocating consolidation of schools at the annual conference ot the New Zealand Educational Institute yesterday. "The days when transport methods were very haphazard made their establishment necessary,” he said, ‘‘but those days have gone.”
The Wellington City Council last night decided to supply the Wellington Board with one-sect mu tramway coupins for out-patients at 2/- for each sheet ot 24 coupons.
