ARTERIAL ROADS
Early Nationalisation The intention of the Government to amend the Main Highways Act at the earliest possible date with a view to providing authority for the nationalisation of main arterial roads was announced by the Minister of Public Works. Hon. R. Semple, when replying to an urgent question by Mr. H. G. Dickie (Opposition, Patea) in the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr. Semple said the date on which these roads would be so taken over would be fixed by the Minister, and there would be no unnecessary delay. In his question Mr. Dickie pointed out. that local bodies were about to budget for main highways expenditure for the current year, but this would be unnecessary if the Government was taking over the main arterial roads in the near future.
