MEMBERS APPLAUD NEW PUBLIC WORKS PROGRAMME
Council Passes Dairy Products Marketing Bill After formal proceedings in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon, further consideration was given to the Factories Amendment Bill. Features of the debate were a historical review, by Mr. A. S. Richards (Government Roskil ) of factory laws in New Zealand seeking to show that bygone legislators were more “revolutionary” as regards protecting factory workers 63 years ago and a maiden speech by Mr. L. G. Dowry (Government, Otaki). , In the evening the debate on. the Factories Amendment . was interrupted to enable the Minister of Public \\ orks, Pion. R. Semple, to make a statement on the Governments scheme o. public works for the next three years at an estimated cost oi £l7 500,000, and the industrial agreement with the New Zealand Workers’ Union. The Minister was heartily applauded by members of the Labour Party. . . , The Legislative Council, after a late sitting the previous night, met in the forenoon and passed the Primary Products Marketing Bill. An effort by the former Leader, Hon. KMasters, to add a new clause providing, for a plebiscite of dairyfarmers on the Bill was defeated decisively.
