WESTERN ACCESS
Request to Government An announcement that advice was being awaited from tbe Government as to its attitude toward the project was made by tbe Mayor, Mr. T. C. A Hislop, at tlie meeting last night of the Wellington City Council, when Cr. T. Brindle asked if any progress had been made with the problem of better access to the western suburbs. The Mayor said tbe council had sent a letter to the Government asking if It would approve or otherwise of an application for an Order-in-Council under tbe Public Works Act for a tramway extension, it being necessary before doing such work to have the approval of the Public Works Depart ment. There the matter rested at present. Meantime some residents of Upper Sydney Street had sent a petition to Parliament against permission for the proposed extension and this had been referred to the appropriate committee of the House of Representatives. The council had made a reply, which was a reply not in advocacy but in fact. He assumed the petition and the reply would come before the appropriate committee and the respective parties would apjienr. Cr. Brindle asked if any other scheme was being considered. The Mayor said oilier proposals had been made. One to take the trams via Norway Street, involving street widen Ing. tunnel driving and land buying would cost the best part of £200.000. A proposal to take the trams straight up Bowen Street, Museum Street and Sydney Sreet would cost about £70.000 and one Bowen Street proposal involving a funnel would cost about £50.. 000
(if all the schemes that of Sydney Street and Museum Street seemed the most likely. What the council wanted to know was If the Government was going to close Museum Street
