HARRIER RUNS

Packs Turn Out on Saturday WET WEATHER DEFIED 111 spite of the boisterous wealbef conditions, Wellington harrier clubs went on with their weekly runs on Saturday afternoon, good-sized packs turning out, and thoroughly enjoying themselves. Olympic Club. Tliere was an attendance, of only 17 members for the Olympic club’s run. Starting from Berhainpore Baptist ('luircli, n trail was followed up via Britomart Street on to the toil of the hills overlooking the golf course. From here the ridge was followed down toward Ohiro Bay Dropping down on to the Happy A alley Hoad, the trail doubled back toward Brooklyn for a little way. and then went over the hill and home again. Altogether about live miles were covered. No paper was laid on account of the few runners. All the runners went out together as one pack. Those, however, who did turn out enjoyed the run very much after the first few hundred yards. It was rather noticeable how the younger runners were keeping up with the older hands. An unofficial run-in over the last 1000 yards resulted in a win for H. Batrick, with MeNnught second, and 51. Sunderland third. This, however, will not count for the run-in cup. Next week the club will hold its maiden handicap, ami the race for the President’s Cup. Scottish Club. Forty members of the Scottish Club attended the weekly run at Island Bay. No trail was laid owing to the high wind, but a course was mapped out beforehand, via Houghton Bay Road, thence down-hill to Lavaud Street, and back along the Parade. A few of the runners then went back to the bay, while the rest climbed Severn Street and came home via Ohiro Bay. Four packs went out so ns to keep evervone on the move, though it appeared harder to keep still, as the full force of the gale was encountered while traversing the hill up Houghton Bay Road. Luckily very little rain fell during the course of the run, which was enjoyed by everyone. No run-in was held. Ail members, and particularly those with an eye on the novice race, to be held on Saturday week, should note that training has commenced from the Basm Reserve every Tuesday and jThursday at 7 p.m. I'arsity Club. The annual novice race of the V arsity club was-held over the usual course from Worser Bay. As most of the course is confined to road work, the rains did not make the going much heavier than usual, but the strong wind was decidedly tiring for most of the hunners along the top of the ridge. Once set on the home stretch along the sea road, however, the men derived considerable assistance from the gale, and times were comparatively good. A. Horsley led for most of the race, with first Tuck and then Reid in second position. The final order was: Horsley (15.44), 1; Reid (16.17), 2; Tuck (16.40), 3; followed by sliller and Grot ton. Presbyterian Club. The Presbyterian club held its weekly run from the Island Bay Presbyterian Church. About 40 members, running In two packs, turned , out for a run of 4} miles, the trail leading up Trent Street on to the hill, then north along the road and down Hintoul ‘Street to the Newtown School. From there it led into Adelaide Road, which was followed back to the church. Afternoon tea was served by slrs. Wainwright and the young ladies of the senior Bible Class. Next week’s run is to be from St, Ronan’s Church, Eastbourne, at 2.45 p.m.
