POPPY DAY SALES Close on £lOO Realised I’uppy Day sales In the Hutt Valley totalled £’JO, and not £73 as previously published and set out in the annual balance-sheet, Colonel C. 11. Six senior and 11 junior and "midget” teams competed, senior and junior games being played at Lower Hutt and the “midgets” at Petone. Second round: Petone West beat Hutt Central B, 1-0; Eastern Hutt beat Hutt Convent, 3-0; Petone Central A beat Epuni, 8-0; Hutt Central A beat Waiwetu, 3-0. Semi-final: Hutt Central A beat Petone Central A, 8-0; Eastern Hutt beat Petone "West, 120. Final: Hutt Central beat Eastern Hutt, 6-0. In the final of the “midgets” competition, Waiwetu beat Petone West, 9-0. DEBATING SOCIETY Successful Past Year Good progress was reported in the report of the Hutt Debating Society presented to the annual meeting which was held in the Hibernian Hall, Laing’s Road, Lower Hutt, on Thursday evening, Mr. F, M. Renner presiding. ’ The society was shown to be in a strong financial position and several new members were elected. _ j.’F Officers were elected as follow: Patron, Hon. W. Nash; president, Mr. B. A. Weyburne; vice-presidents, Mr. V. Piper, Mr. A. H. Smith; secretary, Mr. L. J. McDonald; treasurer, Mr. W. Benton;.committee, Messrs. Renner, Burrell, Scott

and Fisher; social committee, Messrs. Watte and Ashforth. A vote of thanks was passed to the retiring president, Mr, F. M. Renner, and to the secretary, Mr. L. V. Fisher, fur their efforts during the past two years. .Mr. V. Piper, in outlining proposals for the formation of a debating societies’ union, broached a question of paramount importance to all debating societies, and after a brief preliminary discussion it was decided that the society support such a union. More concrete proposals are to be formulated at the next meeting. " COMING-OF-AGE PARTY A happy party wag given recently in the Scout Hall, Lower Hutt, by Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Saunders to celebrate the coming of age of their eldest son, Eric. Tile hall was decorated with gay coloured streamers and flowers, and a wood fire added a bright note. Bronze-shaded chrysanthemums W'ere used for the supper tables, tlte colour scheme being in yellow and orange tones. Dancing, games and competitions were much enjoyed, Mr. Cedric Gardiner being 51. C. The toast to the guest of honour was proposed by Mr. J. F. Johnson, and that to the hast and hostess by Mr. F. F. Thomas. Mrs. Saunders received her gues ts wearing a gown of burgundy silk crepe with gold embroideries and a short fur coat. She was assisted by her daughter, Mrs. L. V.
