WINTER BOWLS
Start of Badges Contest The first Saturday afternoon of the winter bowls season saw every rink filled with keen bowlers,'bent on proving to one another how their game had improved during the summer. Mr. A. Priddle, the manager, has managed. to make the winter rink at the show buildings in John Street a very cosy and altogether inviting place, while sundry improvements have been made to the running surface, which is' now absolutely true over- all seven rinks. On such a stormy afternoon as Saturday the winter rink, ‘artificially warmed, proved a pleasant sanctuary for bonus addicts. The fnv-t official match of the season was for the winter rink badges, which always excites a good deal of interest, as it is considered no small honour to lie able to sport these decorations on the “green.” After a great tussle Ihe game rivalled: Brice, O’Donnell, Mason, J. Hales (s.), 17; R. Ross, Forsyth, Stonebanks, F. Ross (s.), 15. Friendly rink games resulted ns follow: Key IS, Whitelaw 16; P. Smith 25, O’Gorman 17; Taylor 23. McCune 16; Johnstone 23. Conder 19: Walker 19, Duncan 18; M. Hale 22: Bennett 16. Mr. Priddle announced that the first game for the mid-week ferns would commence at 2 p.m. on Thursday next. Arrangements are already in hand for the annual inter-house competition, for which there promises to be,a big entry this winter. It is hoped to commence this competition about the end of the ’moil I h. _ - Under the auspices of the New Zealanders’ Association a rink contest is being instituted. This provides for a bowls contest in rinks for members of the association, which means that entrants must be New Zealand-born. This is the first time such a contest has been initiated in tbc Dominion and a good deal of interest is being manifested in it. There are already 30 entries. Entries close on Saturday next.
