ARCTIC KING

Wins in Fine Finish at Dannevirke FINAL DAY’S CARD Totalisator Up, Despite Bad Weather Br Telegraph—From The Watcher. Woodville, April 30. The annual meeting of the Dannevirke Racing Club concluded on the Woodville course to-day in cold, showery weather, with a strong breeze from the south-west. The track was heavy. The Hartgill Memorial Handicap was wpn in a line finish by the favourite, Arctic King. The totalisator investments for the day were £4905, against £3822 on the second dav last vear. The total for the meeting was £10.454. against £7712/10/-, an increase of £2741/10/-. The inquiry into the fall of Bon Saute in the Juvenile race the first day was concluded. The stewards decided in view of the conflicting nature of the evidence to take no action. The stewards also met to decide a claim by R. Miles for a losing fee on Ephialtes in the hurdle race, but as there was no documentary evidence to substantiate the claim, no action was ta\ten. First Up Hurdle Witt. A fresh horse in Blue Tiger, having his first hurdle race, scored a decisive win in the opening event. He lay toward the rear early, the pace being made by Sporting Song, but Blue Tiger moved up at the half, and taking the lead two fences from home was never afterward in danger. Count Willonyx ran consistently to get second from the favourite Brigadcre, who, while always prominent, did not jump some of his fences too well. Sporting Song weakened over the last half. Looks Useful. In spite of being two. of the last to leave the mark in the Maiden Race, Blue Shirt and Tractile paid the dividends. Blue Shirt ran up prominently on the half and was outside three on the turn, but he ran on in the straight for a comfortable win over Tractile, who did not appear on the scene nnt-1 well in the straight and beat Trimden home after the latter had run out very wide. Both winner and runner-up are in the same stable, and the winner, a half-bro-ther to Kahn Ariki and Head Sevang,. looks a useful sort. Favourite Out of Place. The extra weight stopped Snowball in an endeavour to repeat his first day s effort in the hack seven. .Blue Garter and; Blygain were with him to the straight, where Confiscation- loomed up with a good run. Blygain finished best and Blue Garter stuck better than Confiscation to get second on the line. Reipar, backed to favouritism, again ran a bad race and was beaten at the end of three furlongs. Thrilling Finish. There was a thrilling race in the principal event, the whole field bunching in the straight after Haut Monde had set a solid pace in front. The first to looklikely was Slippery, but he gave way to Red Rufus, who was displaced by Alby and Gay Boy, until finally Arctic King burst through from the back with a winning effort. lie only just got up from Alby, with Gay Boy. Slippery, Red Rufus, Haut Monde, Happy Landing, and Lapel all blanketed. The honours were with the winner, who is now back to his form. Gay Loy is improving. * Beaten in Ground. The Bigot, a hot favourite for the two-year-old race, was beaten in the ground. He was never travelling well and lost ground steadily. In the run home Gay Doll looked the winner until Chat, who had been in the rear early, came through and won very decisively, handling the going well. Martara showed pace, but ran wide into the straight. Another Desperate Finish. The hack sprint saw another desperate finish, Recitation getting up in the last stride to beat the pacemaker,. De Trop, with First Chapter, Royal Solo, and Golden Chest almost in line. Recitation began slowly again, but he had moved up handy on the turn, and his performance was solid. First Chapter looked the unlucky runner, having gone outside four on the turn and coming home still wide out.. Favourite Fails Badly. • Geitel was favourite for the concluding event, but she was never going kindly. Snowball was first away and was never headed, winnings decisively from Helen Ford, who was well clear of Soho and Petrarch. Otaki was squeezed out at the start, losing a lot of ground.
