N.Z. Authors’ Week

Sir, —“Crede’s”' letter in your issue of Friday last regarding a place for New Zealand short-story writers may, perhaps, have been prompted by a little spice of self-interest, but nevertheless is relevent and timely. It is, indeed, somewhat strange that the work of local short-story writers has been ignored and much prominence given to some speakers whose literary efforts are insignificant and do not embrace one of the most difficult forms of creative art, the short story. It is unfortunately true that there is small scope for short-story writing in this country, and no incentive whatever for continued effort, therefore it is discouraging to those who have won some recognition by having their stories published in New Zealand to find that there is no place for them in the “Authors’ Week” exhibition. The idea behind the movement is a good one, and it is to be hoped that it will be revived again next year, and that some mention will be made of the many New Zealanders who write short stories, with some information as to the class of their published work.—l am, etc., .TIM THE PENMAN. Wellington. April 27.
