Sir Herbert Hart Appointed to Commission Bv Telegraph.—Press Association. Masterton, April 29. Sir Herbert Hart has been appointed representative of the War Graves Commission in Hie territory between Cairo and Constantinople. The headquarters are at present in Cairo. Sir Herbert is leaving for England about May 20. Brigadier-General Sir Herbert Hart, K.8.E., C. 8., U.M.G.. D. 5.0., V.D.. was born iu Carterton in 1882, and lie adopted Hie la.jy as his profession. He served in the South African War and was awarded Hie Queen’s Medal (with two clasps). On his return to New Zealand he tools a keen interest iu military affairs. He was promoted to lieutenant in December, 1908, and was appointed major in tlie 17th Regiment in 1912. He left for the Great War with the Main Body, N.Z.E.F., with Hie rank of major, in October, 1914. He was later promoted to lieutenantcolonel and given command of the Wellington Battalion, vice Lieutenant-Colonel Malone, who was killed iu action in August, 1915. He was awarded the D.S.O. for his services on Gallipoli. In December, 1916, he was granted Hie temporary rank of colonel, and temporarily commanded the New Zealand Rifle Brigade during Hie absence *of Brigadier-General Fulton. In May. 1917, he was promoted to Hie rank of brigadier-general, thus becoming Hie first officer of the New Zealand Territorial Army to attain such rank. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre in 1919, and was five times mentioned in dispatches. His knighthood was among the birthday honours of 1935. Sir Herbert was Administrator of Western Samoa from April, 1931, to July, 1935.
