WARSHIPS IN PORT

Cruiser and Two Sloops CITY’S NAME SHIP HERE H.M.S. Dunedin, which arrived at Wellington on Monday morning from Stewart Island, was joined at Clyde Quay Wharf yesterday morning by the sloops Wellington and Leith. The three ships have come to Wellington to enable their crews to go through their annual musketry course at Trentham, and will remain in port for five or six weeks. H.M.S. Wellington, which has been on a cruise round the South Island for several weeks, arrived from Lyttelton at 7 o’clock yesterday morning. Early in the afternoon H.M.S. Leith arrived from the Chatham Islands after a stormy cruise and moored outside the Wellington on the outer side of Clyde Quay Wharf. The Leith is the first warship to visit the Chatham Islands for a number of years. She proceeded there from Akaroa. ami encountered a good deal of stormy weather. The warship received a warm welcome from the islanders, who showed great interest in her. Parties of schoolchildren from Waitangi and Owenga went aboard and were shown over the little ship. Detachments of ratings from the three ships will go”to Trentham at in tervals until all have gone through their musketry course.

The annual Royal Naval rifle meeting will be held at Trentham on April 11, 13 and 14. Fifteen matches will be fired and the eight competitors with the best aggregate in these matches will compete in Match 15 at GOO yards for the championship. During their stay at Wellington one of the three ships will be open lo the public for inspection on Saturday and. Sunday afternoons from 2 o’clock until •5,30. The ship so open will Uy a red pennant with a white cross.
